Plyta’s filmography is a fertile ground for a discussion on gender issues, the female gaze, female empowerment, gendered violence, the depiction of post-war Greek society, the limits and constraints within a rigid patriarchal structure, the adaptation of literary works, modernist cinematic techniques and narrative strategies and the subversion of generic tropes. In her filmography, we also encounter a lot of “firsts” in Greek film history, such as one of the first and rare female-centered biopics worldwide (The Duchess of Plakendia/I Doukissa tis Plakentias, 1956), and one of the first cases of female cross- dressing in Greek cinema (I Am a Man and I Will Do as I Please/Andras Eimai kai to Kefi Mou tha Kano, 1960).
